Wednesday, November 30, 2016 – Awesome Sleep Sweet Review from Writers Digest!

“Julianne DiBlasi Black has given youngsters a lovely bedtime read in Sweet Sleep. The story is laid out as a repeating refrain with a gentle rhythm that will help children release the day for the sleep of evening.

The illustrations are beautifully done with a lushness that carries through from beginning to end. Each page spread repeats the message of sweet sleep and depicts it in a rich painting that is realistic while leaving plenty of room for imagination to play.”

Monday, November 28, 2016 – My Interview is up on!

From the interview….

When writing Sleep Sweet did anything stand out as particularly challenging?
I think creating a succession of events leading from wide awake to fast asleep in the limited time frame of a picture book was the most challenging. The illustrations feature her getting more and more tired, finally falling asleep. It was difficult judging based on reading it aloud, how that would translate when reading it to a child. Too fast and they miss the point and don’t have the time to get relaxed, too long and you’ve become boring to the adult reading it. It was an interesting balancing act…..

Friday, November 11, 2016 – Sleep Sweet is Story Monsters Ink Approved!

The Story Monsters Approved! designation was developed by Five Star Publications, Inc. to recognize and honor accomplished authors in the field of children’s literature, as well as children’s products that inspire, inform, teach, or entertain. A Story Monsters seal of approval on your book or product cover tells parents, grandparents, educators, and caregivers they are giving children the very best.

Kids know when they see the Story Monsters Approved! patch it means children their own age enjoyed the book or product and are recommending it, too. How do they know that? Because after books and products pass the first round of judging by industry experts, they are then judged by a panel of youth judges who must also endorse the books or products before they can receive the official seal of approval.

Wednesday, November 9th, 2016 – Great Article on AR , Spellbound and Sleep Sweet!

Ann Arbor is a hub for virtual and augmented reality. But can we keep it that way?

When “Pokémon GO” debuted earlier this year, it made the futuristic concept of augmented reality a daily, addictive part of countless lives.

But the game is just the latest advancement in the intertwined worlds of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), and the next could originate from the burgeoning AR and VR hub of Ann Arbor. [[ Read the full article here ]]

Using technology to bring books alive – AHS grad, accomplished author in California, deploys ‘augmented reality’  By Judy Wakefield Oct 20, 2016

Move over Pokemon Go as you are not the only Augmented Reality device attracting users.

A children’s book author who grew up in town has augmented one of her books to use 3D animation that lets young readers touch the animations on their electronic device screen to get the reader to react to the book’s characters – butterflies float around the room, lions roar and waves crash.

“This is all done on the the child’s lap transporting them page by page to someplace else,” author Julianne (DiBlasi) Black of California wrote in an email when asked about using the augmented reality style in her book….. [[ Read the rest here ]]

Winning any place in the Purple Dragonfly Contest is a huge honor because in order to maintain the integrity of the Dragonfly Book Awards, a minimum score is required before a First or Second place or Honorable Mention will be awarded to the entrant – even if it is the sole entry in a category,” explains Linda F. Radke, president of Five Star Publications, the sponsor of the Dragonfly Book Awards. “Competition is steep, too, because there is no publication date limit as long as the book is still in print.”

Brave and beautiful princess checking out Sleep Sweet at Motts Children’s Hospital in MI through the Spellbound App

SpellBound has been nominated for an augmented reality “Auggie” award for this year’s Augmented World Expo! Please vote for “SpellBound MED” in the Best Enterprise Solution category. Anyone can vote and it only takes one click!

From the2016  Augmented World Expo entry: SpellBound MED uses augmented reality technology to create amazing patient experiences for children, improving satisfaction for families, and reducing procedural costs for hospitals.

SpellBound MED offers a suite of tools designed specifically for therapists to use with children in the hospital setting on the mobile devices they already carry.

We create distraction tools, such as 3D experiences for books, that help kids get through painful or scary procedures. When a child is engaged with SpellBound, they are not focused on the unpleasantness of the situation and hospital staff can get their job done quickly, and right the first time.

We create entertainment tools, such as turning a child’s hospital room into a 3D scene from a book, providing moments of joy and escape for patients and their families. We create calming moments, such as seeing a hallway turned into an underwater adventure on the way to the operating room. When a child is not anxious or stressed they are more compliant and mentally ready for their treatment or procedure.

SpellBound is reimagining the patient experience, providing moments of joy and escape as well as therapeutic benefit for pediatric patients.

!!!!Please vote!!!!! Voting does not require emails or names!

Date Announced for Fall Solo Show Artist Reception

Julianne DiBlasi Black Art Exhibit: “Color & Vibration”
Reception: Saturday, November 4 2016 @ 7:00 pm in the Coso Room
Exhibit: October 31 2016 through January 01, 2017 in the Coso Room
“Color & Vibration” is a multi-media exhibit of paintings on a variety of media, created to celebrate the original design elements of the petroglyphs with a modern twist of bright color and pop. Many of the works are painted directly on three-dimensional reclaimed wood structures, letting the texture, shapes and surface imperfections influence the design of the overall piece – an homage to the original stone artwork, also on unpredictable and unstable surfaces.
Born in Massachusetts, Black’s art has been deeply influenced by her collected life experiences and cultural studies from around the planet. Bringing to her work deeply intimate patterns and colors from visits to South America and Africa, she gently “folds in” bright metallics and geometric minimalistic shapes into the design mix.
Directing her eclectic background into the original petroglyph shapes, she hopes to give them an alternate existence where they can be respected and appreciated in a new light – a series of fun, bold technicolor recreations available for viewing in our gallery.

January 25, 2016 – Sleep Sweet & Spellbound featured on Channel 7 News

6:07 AM, Jan 25, 2016

(WXYZ) – A Michigan startup is teaming up with one local hospital to help create a magical experience for young patients.

SpellBound is an app that uses augmented reality technology to create a virtual pop-up book from ordinary story pages.

For the animations to come to life, a user must open the app and point their smartphone toward the book, according to the product’s website.

The team that created SpellBound won Startup Weekend Detroit in 2014 and is now partnering with C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital.

One of the SpellBound co-founders, Christina York, tells 7 Action News they are working with child life specialists to get the technology into hospital rooms.

Their aim is to normalize the hospital experience for the kids, and to give them some magic as a pleasant distraction.
In the next two weeks, the special app and one of the paired books will be introduced at Mott.

“We are really excited,” said York. “Even a few minutes of magic where they can escape the world…they can have moments of joy and be a kid again.”

York says they are interested in working with other local hospitals, too, to help children enjoy books in a new and creative way.

The Ann Arbor-based startup, ALTality, is currently crowdfunding on Indiegogo to help with the SpellBound project.

The app works with Android and iOS devices. Right now, the SpellBound “magic” is compatible with two books. We’re told at least five more book pairings are in the works.

January 21, 2016 – Sleep Sweet at Motts Children’s Hospital in Michigan

January 19, 2016 – Sleep Sweet Formatted for the Get Well Network

Since the pages of Sleep Sweet have been morphed into eBook and Augmented Reality formats, the pages make a logical addition to the Get Well Network – the closed circuit TV system in children’s hospitals. Currently Spellbound is testing the content on Mott Children’s Hospital network and if all goes well, it will be released to the rest of the Network reaching children across the US with just a click of their bedside remote.

The Network presentation will have not only the pages of the book, but also the narration and music developed for the Augmented Reality app to accompany it. Fingers crossed that testing goes well!
